As well as the extremely extrovert, testosterone laden, hard drinking fighter jocks from the 50s, 60s and 70s. A condensed view of the pressure and risks involved in the everyday life of fighter pilot training.
Gandt does a nice job of balancing the technical details of flying with the personalities of each pilot.

Gandt follow his class through every phase of the process, from first aircraft familiarisation to final assignment to the fleet, so we learn a lot.
