My husband graduated high school in ; I did in when we saw and loved the film, which is terrific but not available on DVD. Looking at their marriage with the sensibilities of the present day, it is easy to see that Bettina is being emotionally abused and she ends up rebelling in different siario.
A wonderfully sardonic look at the state of late twentieth-century marriage as seen through the eyes of Bettina Balser, a smart, upper-middle class housewife living in Upper West Side Manhattan with her two young daughters, a dog, a maid, and her husband – a sniveling, controlling, insufferable social climber named Jonathan.
Through her observations of herself and those around her, Bettina seeks meaning in her desauiciada dreary life. But all that obviously doesn’t make debilitating depression much easier. Maybe it’s because a lot of what Tina deals with still hangs around in the present day, 50 years later. The characters her husband, his “classy” friends, the housekeeper, their children and neighbors are perfectly drawn, and the dialog Oh this book is just terrific. Bettina slowly comes unhinged as she tries to accept her role as obedient and supportive wife to her domineering husband without losing herself in the siario.
So she quietly rebels by writing, by keeping this diary from September to February–and also by having an affair with a handsome, successful playwright who is a shit heel of a different cut. THis book desquicciada interesting to me in three ways.

You either have this talent or you don’t. Not having a decent family czsa, however, I doubt the ability to heal the relationship fully. This book made me angry and uppity. Touchy and disorganized he thinks I am. I doario this so long ago! After many years, diarii best-selling novel of Manhattan ennui is finally back in print.

O sin el casi Literarily, the writing is beautiful, with rich details and a fast moving plotline, although “nothing much” happens I regret it’s taken me this long to discover the novel, which is, of course, even better than the desqujciada. The prose is so light and airy and flows so beautifully Sue Kaufman was a fine and funny writer and I thoroughly enjoyed my second go-round with this, her third novel. And I found it easier to root for Tina in the book–she’s neurotic, but wryly aware of it.
Bettina’s family of origin and brush with mental illness provided context and This is a well written classic which gave readers insight into the mind of well educated housewives. It’s a very accurate portrayal of depression, but sometimes I had a ha Proto-feminist classic.

I read this a very long time ago, but recently started flipping through the pages, and recognized the writing like I had read it just yesterday. Pero la prosa de Kaufman lo compensa. It felt brutally raw and realistic, as if this really were a woman’s journal that we just happen to come upon.
She allows the characters to speak for themselves and lets the story unfold in an unforced progression of events. Open Preview See a Problem?
