Much like Thomas Hardy, Quiroga had a very depressing life. The closing story, “The Son,” though one of the briefest in the book packs a twist ending worthy of the best of Ambrose Bierce’s shoc A disciple of Poe and Kipling and forerunner to Marquez and Borges, Quiroga was entirely unknown to me before he turned up as an answer in a Halloween horror fiction quiz in the Phila.
He also excelled in portraying mental illness and hallucinatory states, a skill he gleaned from Edgar Allan Poeaccording to some critics. On her fourth birthday little Bertita falls ill, having eaten a surfeit of sweets; in contrast with her brothers she is spoiled and overindulged. In Past Love history repeats itself: Whether characters are dead, dying, or have it soon coming, Quiroga explores it with fervency.
Yet this second disaster sprouted new flames of a dying love, an insane longing to redeem, once and for all, the sanctity of their love. They learned, in time, certain imitative faculties; but could grasp nothing more.
