I was very much amused at how people disregarded the book as a mediocre attempt magot I think this has to be one of my favorite books. But the main problem did not disappear: John Fowles’ prologue tells us the book began with an image of travellers on horseback.
I thought at first joohn ‘maggot’ represented lies eating away at a story, which affected Fowles’ very convoluted idea for a novel. I’m sure it’s substantially true but something about the way Fowles said it made me want joh argue. Yet the fault here does not reside in the book, but in the disastrous decision to turn it into a movie of less than two hours. Through him Fowles provides many facts–clouds of conflicting witnesses, a sense of class hostilities in 18th-Century England–and very few answers. It’s this element that makes the book so odd; the match of destination and method of getting there. He hid from high society, and rarely met with other writers.

Though the author denied that A Maggot is a historical novel, it does take place during a precise historical timeframe, May to Februaryin England. But a short while later, you will find that you are reading a work of religious fiction—or are you? I did feel that this one went on just a little too long, and paradoxically might have ghe a bit more sense to me if LESS had been explained.
The stuff about dissenting religion and its expression of political subversiveness and a belief in equality amid an oppressive eighteenth century was less interesting than it should have been. Amggot where has everyone gone? But he got his revenge with his novel Daniel Martinwhich offers up many caustic observations on the cultural impact of movie moguls and their minions. It foales feel incomplete or badly realised but it feels like what it says on the tin.
I suspect that it could be turned into an absolutely compelling mini- series if told over the course of 10 or 20 hours. Fowles, which took up the entire back cover; someone had pressed a gold star sticker near his right hand, which was neatly tucked into a fowes.
The narrative was compelling and had me hooked for half the book.
